Start with the finished handling unit
Describe the freight as it will actually be tendered. For pallets, crates, or skids, record the full outside dimensions and gross weight for each distinct handling-unit type. Avoid blending different units into one average when their dimensions or weights differ.
Information to gather
- Origin and destination: ZIP codes at minimum; full addresses when ready to request a quote.
- Handling units: number and type of pallets, crates, skids, or other pieces.
- Dimensions: final packed length, width, and height for each distinct unit.
- Weight: gross weight for each unit when known.
- Commodity: a clear description of what is being shipped.
- Freight class/NMFC: provide verified information if available; do not invent a class from a product name.
- Pickup and delivery conditions: business or residential location, dock or forklift availability, limited access, and other relevant constraints.
- Services: liftgate, appointment, inside delivery, notification, or other requirements that genuinely apply.
- Timing: ready date and any real delivery deadline or appointment requirement.
If you do not know the freight class
Rate Farm can estimate a density-based class from dimensions and weight, but commodity-specific NMFC provisions can differ. Treat the estimate as a question to verify—not a substitute for the applicable classification rule.
If you already have a quote
Compare the quote's assumed weight, class, handling-unit count, origin/destination conditions, and services with the shipment you plan to tender. A mismatch is a reason to ask the quoting party what assumptions were used; it does not by itself prove the price or quote is wrong.
