Freight class is ultimately determined by the applicable NMFC item, which can depend on the specific commodity's handling, stowability, and liability characteristics — not density alone. This tool provides a density-based estimate, calculated the same way Rate Farm's full Builder does, using the National Motor Freight Traffic Association's (NMFTA) current 13-tier density scale (NMFC Docket 2025-1, effective July 19, 2025) — not an official NMFTA or ClassIT+ classification.

How Rate Farm evaluates your shipment

A freight class estimate starts with density — a shipment's weight divided by the space it occupies. Density alone doesn't tell the whole story, though: NMFC classification also weighs handling, stowability, and liability, and different handling units within the same shipment can genuinely land in different classes. (See how freight density is calculated for the full breakdown.)

That distinction matters more than it might seem. Blending several pallets into one shipment-wide average density can make a shipment look like it belongs in a single class when it doesn't — a small, dense pallet and a large, light one rarely share a real classification, even though their combined average might suggest otherwise. Rate Farm calculates each handling unit's density and estimated class individually, then flags the shipment as mixed when they differ, rather than presenting one averaged number as though it were the answer.

The result above is Rate Farm's estimate, not a final NMFC determination. Carriers can reweigh, remeasure, and reclassify freight after pickup based on the commodity's actual characteristics. Preparing accurate dimensions, weight, and shipment details before you request a quote is the most reliable way to reduce that risk — which is what the Builder and Shipment Brief are for.

Request your quote. Take this information to a broker or carrier — Rate Farm doesn't book freight or guarantee the final rate, but you'll walk into that conversation better prepared.

Catch it before the carrier does

Most pallet shipments don't fail because of the carrier — they fail because a detail was missed before booking. Rate Farm flags liftgate, residential, and limited-access requirements up front.

An estimate that shows its work

Every freight class and confidence rating comes with the reasons behind it — not just a number. You'll know exactly what's certain and what still needs confirming.
