What Is Freight Density and Why Does It Matter?

Density is a major factor in how many LTL commodities are classified — and it's something you can calculate yourself before you ever request a quote.

Density, in plain terms

Freight density is how much a shipment weighs relative to how much space it takes up, expressed in pounds per cubic foot (PCF). A shipment can be heavy and dense (a pallet of bagged cement) or heavy for its weight but very light on space (a pallet of pillows) — and those two shipments get treated very differently by a carrier, even at the exact same weight.

How to calculate it

For a single pallet, the formula is straightforward:

  1. Multiply length × width × height (in inches) to get cubic inches.
  2. Divide by 1,728 to convert to cubic feet.
  3. Divide the pallet's weight (in pounds) by that cubic-foot figure.

For example, a pallet measuring 48×40×40 inches works out to 44.4 cubic feet. At 900 lbs, that's a density of about 20.25 PCF.

Multiple pallets: if a shipment has more than one handling unit, current NMFC guidance (Item 110) calls for density to be calculated per handling unit when individual weights are known — not averaged across the whole shipment. Two pallets with very different densities shouldn't be blended into one number; each is generally evaluated on its own — see why two pallets can end up with different freight classes for a worked example. Why density drives freight class

The National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) system uses density as the primary input for a large share of general commodities — denser freight generally gets a lower (cheaper) freight class, and lighter, bulkier freight gets a higher (more expensive) class. That's because low-density freight takes up trailer space a carrier could otherwise sell, even though it doesn't weigh much.

The current density-based scale runs from Class 400 (under 1 PCF) down to Class 50 (50+ PCF) across 13 density brackets. The 13-sub structure was introduced under NMFC Docket 2025-1, effective July 19, 2025; later NMFC updates have continued changing commodity provisions, so the applicable NMFC item still needs to be verified for the shipment.

What density alone doesn't tell you

Density is the primary factor for many general-commodity items, but it isn't the whole story. Some commodities carry item-specific NMFC classifications based on handling requirements, stowability, or liability characteristics that aren't captured by density alone — which is why an estimated class based on density should be verified against the applicable NMFC item before booking, particularly for unusual, fragile, or high-value freight.

Why it's worth knowing before you request a quote

If the shipment's measured weight or dimensions differ from what was declared, the resulting density or classification can differ too. Knowing the actual shipment measurements before requesting a quote gives the quoting party a much better starting point and makes later corrections less likely.
