What an accessorial is

An accessorial is a service or requirement outside a carrier’s standard service. Carriers publish their own accessorial rules and charges, so the exact list and price depend on the carrier, service, account terms, and shipment.

Liftgate

A liftgate is equipment used to move freight between a truck and ground level when a suitable dock or other loading equipment is not available. Carrier rules differ, but liftgate service is commonly treated as an accessorial and should be requested when it is needed.

Residential pickup or delivery

Residential service can carry an additional charge. The important part is to tell the carrier what the pickup or delivery location actually is instead of assuming that a home-based business, rural property, or other unusual site will be treated the same way as a commercial dock.

Limited-access locations

Carriers may have separate rules for locations such as construction sites, schools, churches, military facilities, trade shows, or other places where access is restricted or special equipment or coordination may be required. The definition is carrier-specific, so the shipment should identify the site rather than relying on a universal list.

Appointments

An appointment is not automatically required just because a delivery is residential, limited access, or non-dock. Some receivers require appointments, and some carriers offer or charge for appointment service. Confirm the requirement with the receiving location and the carrier before booking.
