The short answer
Measure the greatest length, width, and height of the handling unit as it will actually be tendered to the carrier — including the pallet itself, any overhang, and any wrap, straps, or projections. Not the product alone. Not the pallet's footprint alone. The full outer envelope of what a forklift would actually pick up.
Why the "as tendered" part matters
A carrier's dimensioner at the terminal doesn't measure your product; it measures whatever is sitting on the dock. If a box overhangs the pallet edge by two inches, or stretch wrap adds bulk at the corners, that's part of the handling unit now — and it's what gets weighed and dimensioned if the shipment is inspected. Numbers that only reflect the product inside the wrap, rather than the unit as it actually sits, are the single most common reason a declared density doesn't match what a carrier finds later.
Length and width
Measure edge to edge across the full footprint of the loaded pallet, at its widest points, not just the pallet's own footprint. If anything — a box corner, a strap buckle, an oddly stacked layer — extends past the pallet's edge, that's where the measurement ends, not where the pallet itself ends.
Height
Measure from the floor to the highest point of the load, and include the pallet's own height in that number. This is the dimension people most often get wrong, because it's easy to measure the load sitting on the pallet and forget the pallet itself is part of the handling unit — a standard wood pallet typically adds several inches on its own.
What counts toward the dimensions
- The pallet itself, not just what's stacked on it.
- Any overhang beyond the pallet's edges, on any side.
- Stretch wrap, strapping, or corner boards, if they extend the outer envelope.
- Uneven or leaning stacks — measure to the actual highest and widest point, not an average.
What generally doesn't need to be force-fit into the box: genuinely loose, unattached items resting on top that would obviously be repositioned or removed before the pallet ships. If you're not sure whether something counts, the safer assumption is that it does — a carrier's dimensioner won't make that distinction for you.
Weight
Use the total weight of the handling unit as it will actually be picked up — product, packaging, and pallet together. This is usually described as the scale-ticket weight: what the whole unit weighs on a scale, not just what's printed on a product spec sheet.
A quick example
Say you've built a pallet and the boxes sit flush with the pallet edges, but one strap of stretch wrap bulges slightly at a corner, and the load sits 44 inches above the floor once you include the pallet. Length and width are measured to the outer point of that bulge, not the box edge underneath it; height is 44 inches, floor to top, not the box height alone. Weighed together, that's the number that goes into a density calculation.
Common mistakes
- Measuring the product, not the unit. Product spec sheets describe the item, not the pallet, wrap, and packaging around it.
- Forgetting the pallet's own height. It's part of the handling unit's outer dimensions.
- Ignoring overhang. A box that hangs an inch past the pallet edge changes the footprint, even if it looks negligible.
- Measuring one pallet and assuming the rest match. If a shipment has more than one handling unit, each one gets its own dimensions and weight — see why two pallets can end up with different freight classes for why that matters.
- Rounding down "to be safe." Rounding in either direction just moves where the discrepancy shows up — round to the nearest whole, reasonable unit and record what you actually measured.
